Alondra Piña Flores left her home state of Guanajuato, Mexico and has been living in Texas since June of 2021. Life for Alondra in Guanajuato was very traditional and comfortable, she did not work and spent most of her time at home or visiting nearby family, especially her grandmother. Some of Alondra’s family and her dad were already residing in Bryan/College Station which made the decision of moving to the US a little bit easier.

Since moving to the States, Alondra finds herself liking the sense of freedom and independence the most. She feels that most people you meet have a different aura of courage because of this feeling of freedom and independence as well. Alondra’s daily life consists of going to work or helping her mother at home with household chores during the week. On the weekends Alondra much enjoys going to the movies, going out to eat, visiting Lake Bryan, going shopping, or just spending time with her loved ones. 

Alondra joined the ESL classes at BIIN this fall along with her brother. She remembers being very nervous to attend her first class but in the following weeks she found herself gaining more and more confidence. What helped her the most was the many activities and games that were organized into lesson plans that made learning English fun. Alondra would also like to thank the volunteers for being so helpful, answering any questions she had, and for being patient. 

All in all, Alondra’s endeavor of bettering her English in hopes of enrolling in a GED course has been made a little more realistic with the help of BIIN. It has helped her be consistent in working towards achieving this goal and no matter how tired she is, she loves knowing that BIIN is there and provides this service to help her learn. Alondra hopes that BIIN and its services will always be available to her and people like her who are navigating assimilating to life in the US.

Alondra Piña Flores salió de su estado natal de Guanajuato, México y vive en Texas desde Junio de 2021. La vida de Alondra en Guanajuato era muy tradicional y cómoda, no trabajaba y pasaba la mayor parte del tiempo en casa o visitando a familiares cercanos, especialmente a su abuela. Algunos miembros de la familia de Alondra y su padre ya residían en Bryan/College Station, lo que hizo que la decisión de mudarse a los EE. UU. fuera un poco más fácil.

Desde que se mudó a los Estados Unidos, a Alondra le gusta más la sensación de libertad e independencia. Ella siente que la mayoría de las personas que conoces tienen un aura diferente de coraje debido también a este sentimiento de libertad e independencia. El día a día de Alondra consiste en ir a trabajar o ayudar a su madre en casa con las tareas del hogar durante la semana. Los fines de semana, a Alondra le gusta mucho ir al cine, salir a comer, visitar el lago Bryan, ir de compras o simplemente pasar tiempo con sus seres queridos.

Alondra se unió a las clases de ESL en BIIN este otoño junto con su hermano. Recuerda estar muy nerviosa por asistir a su primera clase, pero en las semanas siguientes empezó a ganar cada vez más confianza. Lo que más la ayudó fueron las muchas actividades y juegos que se organizaron en planes de lecciones que hicieron que aprender  inglés fuera divertido. A Alondra también le gustaría agradecer a los voluntarios por ser tan útiles, responder cualquier pregunta que tuviera y por ser pacientes.

Con todo, el esfuerzo de Alondra de mejorar su inglés con la esperanza de inscribirse en un curso de GED se ha hecho un poco más una realidad con la ayuda de BIIN. Le ha ayudado a ser constante en el trabajo para lograr este objetivo y no importa lo cansada que esté, le encanta saber que BIIN está ahí y brinda este servicio para ayudarle a aprender. Alondra espera que BIIN y sus servicios siempre estén disponibles para ella y para personas como ella que están asimilándose a la vida en los EE. UU.
